2015: My Year in Music

2015: My Year in Music

Sharing music with others can be very intimate as it is intimidating. I think we can all agree that being in charge of the aux cord can be a very anxious experience, especially since the vibe of the car ride can be KILLED by a poor song choice. Should you play Top 40? R&b throwback? Or an obscure soundcloud remix? (I've learned that Paris Hilton's two smash singles, Nothing in this World and Stars are Blind, are always fun to play in this situation.)

Sharing music can also be an experience that brings people together. A lot of the artists I've listened to this year were suggested by my friends and we've even gone to some of these artists' shows together. I wanted to emulate that same bond by creating a list of my favorite albums and EPs from this year instead of a monthly playlist. This post was inspired by my Spotify's "Year in Music" results, which were skewed by my habit of listening to an album until I'm sick of it. Disclaimer: I am very much aware that I gravitate towards specific genres and sounds. There are also a few albums listed that were released in 2014, but I was introduced to them earlier this year.

This year, some of the most popular high-end brands like Chloé and Dior have been releasing collections with a pale pink/nude color palette. (As much as I don't want to admit it, this trend really started gaining mainstream love after Yeezus Season 2 came out.) If you're like me and are not a porcelain doll, get excited because this nude palette embraces your skin color too. People have been stressing the nude-lip trend for a while now so it was only a matter of time before it made its way into our closets.

Holiday shopping is equal parts fun as it is stressful, depending on the person you're giving to. Buying a gift card is so lame, no matter the intentions, because deep down people just want to tear open a present. I've compiled a list that I think would be perfect for anyone from your ride-or-die to your roommates and even siblings. Keep on reading to see what's on my list.

November was honestly a blur of a month for me. In my last post I cursed myself and ended up not finishing a single book this month. Oh well. Here are some of my favorite things that stuck out to me throughout November.

On Friday I came down with a horrible 24-hour stomach flu so sadly (or thankfully?) I couldn't partake in the chaos that is Black Friday. Now I'll just have to shop from the comfort of my own bed...rough. If you're like me and you love a good discount any day of the year, I suggest signing up for UNiDAYS: it's a site that requires a .edu email and it offers discounts year 'round.

Verve Coffee Roasters in DTLA
Between midterms and halloween,  I haven't been purchasing things besides coffee. Along with that, I am also a creature of habit so my cosmetics and skin care rarely change. Most of my favorites have been entertainment-related since I have found more time in my day to do other things besides school work. Let me know what you loved in October in the comments below!

Last-Minute Halloween Ideas

Last-Minute Halloween Ideas

Happy Halloweek! This weekend is arguably the most hyped up weekend of the year, so let's all take a moment and lower our expectations. I love Halloween because, in theory, it's an excuse to dress up and embrace a different persona. However, living on a college student budget means I can never bring myself to spend crazy amounts of money on a cheaply made costume I'll wear once. Instead, I usually like to buy clothing pieces I can use in everyday life. Below are some pieces worth investing in. I took inspiration from characters in some of my favorite films. Dressing like characters is way more fun than dressing like celebrities because: 1. You can pretend you have a great taste in movies and 2. everyone already tries to be like Kim K on any given day.

This post is probably too late. Not even Amazon Prime can save you now.

Autumn Trends and Recent Purchases

Autumn Trends and Recent Purchases

Let me just state the obvious: the seasons hardly change in southern California. If anything, autumn signals the end of the September heat wave. Most of us will start wearing sweaters whenever the temperature reaches 70. I thought I'd share some of the items I've bought in the past few weeks to mix some recent fall trends with my current closet. After all, I'm not going to let the sweltering heat stop me from dressing in a more autumnal fashion (within reason).

It's that time of the month to reflect on some of my favorite things that I've worn, read, watched and listened to throughout September. September was such a weird month for me because I had to adjust to college life in a different school. (That's one of the reasons why I haven't been posting as frequently. You can imagine how awkward is it asking someone you've known for two weeks to take outfit photos for you.) Maybe I'll save that for a different post. Until then, here are my September favorites.

It's no secret that nostalgia has infected fashion week. A couple seasons ago the nostalgia binge started bringing back the 90's and now we're all about the vibes of the 60's and 70's. I don't blame these designer houses for going back in time. I'm sure it's hard to find inspiration in the modern muse when most of us would rather be wearing some variation of Lululemon leggings than leather pants.

I tried to make sense of the madness that is NYFW, or more specifically, the madness that are my social media feeds during this time of the year. I separated my favorite shows into three categories: Art Hoe, Penny Lane and Bedroom Wear.  I'm going to warn you, this is a lengthy post. Get comfy.

Most of the time when people ask how I keep my skin so clear, I either reply "It's the Asian genes." or I'll thank my mom for nervously running around me, trying to protect my skin from the sun. But now I've been sticking to a skin care routine and I thought I'd share that instead of really embarrassing anecdotes. I've gone through many different kinds of products, both higher end and drug store, and here are the products that have been working for me recently!

I don't have many tangible favorites from the month of April because most of my energy was focused on music. I am the most annoying person on Earth, in the way that once I have a big weekend or something significant it's all I talk about until the next big event rolls around. During the month of April that event was (cue the eyerolls)...Coachella. Most of the music I listened to over the past month was in preparation for the festival, but my music favorites do have a few other tracks. Here are some photos from some of my favorite performances from the past month, as well as this past weekend. I know most are repeats of pictures I posted in my Coachella Photo Diary, but in my defense I was more into vibing in the moment than snapping a pic.

Spring and Summer Essentials

If you've seen my Music Festival Inspiration post, then some of these might seem familiar. But like I've said before, I believe most music festival attire are perfect for your overall spring and summer wardrobe. This year I'm trying to stray away from my pretty basic outfits by adding more texture to my closet. Here are some picks I think everyone could add to their closet and why I think so. (There really is no rhyme or reason to the list, so have fun playing connect-the-item.)

This past week I spent my spring break back home in southern California. It was so refreshing to finally feel the warmth of the sun on my skin again. The overall silhouette of this outfit is pretty "baggy" and feels very Californian to me.  I guess it's because anything that can be described as flowy captures California's relaxed vibe. This eyelet peasant top is going to be a staple in my closet this year since it's cute and airy. Essentially, I won't be sweating over any potential sweat marks on my clothes. As for my jeans, I never understood the association between loose jeans and boyfriends. If anything, I appreciate boys who wear jeans skinnier than my own.

What I'm wearing:

Essentially this little segment of my blog is a way for me to showcase outfits I liked, but with photos that just didn't make the cut for Instagram. Last weekend I went to New York for Teen Vogue's Fashion University, so before the panels began I played tourist for a day. I went to the Top of the Rock bought a hat to support my fave, Jimmy Fallon. That's pretty much as touristy as my purchases got. Overall I had the most amazing weekend and TVFU inspired me so much I have so many ideas for content on this blog! Stay tuned for more content!

New York Fashion Week, specifically designers Karen Walker, Derek Lam and Rebecca Minkoff, made it clear that the 90s revival is over. It's all about the 70s so bring on the fringe, suede and so much camel outerwear that Kim K can't possibly wear it all on her own. Now we can all stop comparing our style to Cher from Clueless and channel Penny Lane from Almost Famous instead. (Except Penny Lame would never wear band tees.) I dressed up the whole outfit with this statement necklace I bought last year as a feeble attempt to add a bohemian vibe to my closet. As for my coat, I found it in the sale section of Forever 21.  It would be better for those suited in temperate climates, rather than the freezing cold. Suede (faux or not) will probably be the only main trend I will be wearing since I hate fringe almost as much as I hate tattoo chokers. The day I wear anything with fringe will probably be the same day I figure out how to my hair in a ponytail without looking bald.

February Favorites

Here's a little compilation of things I discovered during February.

  •  Cold-pressed juice: Over the past month I followed a ton of different food instagrams so I would have a reason to take the L besides going between home and class. Because of it, I have renewed my love for pressed juice. (I know, very stereotypical southern Californian of me.) The top row is from a pressed juicery called Harvest Juicery. The middle row is from my new favorite juice place called Owen + Alchemy. They even had blended bowls, like acai bowls, which are a rare find in the city.
  • Almond milk lattes: For a while I tried teaching myself to drink coffee black or with minimal amounts of sugar. It didn't really work well, but I found I love almond milk lattes. The cliché latte picture is from a café called Dollop Coffee Company, near the downtown campus of my university. I'm pretty sure it's a franchise around Chicago.
  • Iron Maiden shirt: My last favorite is this Iron Maiden shirt I got from Topshop. When I bought it I broke one of my own personal rules: don't wear a band tee if you don't listen to them. In reality, though, if I only limited myself to artists I do listen to I'd probably be sporting a Beyoncé shirt all the time. Besides, Topshop was having a "buy one get one free" deal on their sale section so technically I didn't even spend money on this tee. I love it because it's easy to dress up and down, which is probably why I wear it multiple times a week.
Here's my playlist for the month. Some of my favorites are:
  • Greek Tragedy by The Wombats (one of my favorite bands ever, give their song "Emoticons" a listen too)
  • Homesick by Catfish and the Bottlemen
  • Salt by Bad Suns (their vibe just makes me miss California)
  • Someone New by Hozier
  • Octahate by Ryn Weaver
  • Fade Away by Susanne Sundfør
